Putting local breakfast on the map
Next time you tuck into a Billy’s Big Breakfast, you might like to know that most of the ingredients on the plate, and in your cup, have been produced no more than 16 miles away from our café, all within Sussex.
Dip a corner of your toast into a fried egg knowing that it has travelled just 10 miles from Hallgate Farm in Petworth. We crack our way through around 2,000 eggs a week, not just in our breakfasts, and they are delivered twice a week by Nick `The Egg man’ .
Then guide your fork into a succulent Cumberland sausage handmade by butcher John Murray and his team at the shop in Loxwood, seven miles away. We source most of our meat from Johnny, as he is known to his friends, and sizzle our way through around 800 sausages a week.
Grilled tomatoes add an extra splash of colour on a Big Breakfast plate, and ours are especially flavoursome as they come from Nutbourne Nursery, seven miles away near Pulborough, where the Griffiths family cultivate more than 30 varieties.
And if you are a plate mopper – and who wouldn’t want to savour every last mouthful of a Billy’s Big Breakfast? – then the bread you are using to soak up the juices is freshly made at our local bakers in Billingshurst, Jengers. This family business has been baking for generations and its bakers are up with the lark each day to ensure we have the freshest loaves and rolls.
If you prefer to wash your breakfast down with a cup of coffee, then Billy has personally chosen the blend and has it freshly roasted by Edgcumbes, of Arundel. And if you are in need of a palate cleanser, then we recommend a glass of fresh apple juice made by Tullens Farm in Pulborough. The cloudy juice has no added sugar and maintains its original colour. Try Cox/Bramley, Discovery and Worcester varieties.
We try our hardest to use seasonal ingredients and support local businesses who produce high quality ingredients wherever possible. So next time you are tempted by a Billy’s Big Breakfast, you can feel quite virtuous in the fact you are consuming less food miles and enjoying local Sussex produced ingredients…And we forgot to say that it’s all cooked fresh by our chefs who are local too!
