Dig deep for animal rescue
Our regulars will know that we are dog mad here at the cafe, especially Billy who has two of her own. We never miss an opportunity to give a spare sausage to any four-legged visitor, and happily sponsor the Wisborough Green Fete sausage race every year. So, when we heard about the plight of Holbrook Animal Rescue Centre, near Horsham, we just had to help.
Finding homes for strays
This amazing family-run rescue centre has been working hard for the past 26 years to find good homes for unwanted, stray and abandoned dogs and cats. It is staffed completely by volunteers and funded solely by donations with every penny going towards veterinary costs, feeding and care of the animals. In more than two decades, the registered charity has rehomed about 2500 dogs, 1200 cats, plenty of rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens and even the occasional horse and goat. And any sick or old animals that can’t be rehomed have been welcomed into the homes of its own volunteers. At any one time the rescue centre can be looking after 50 animals, where they live in large communal rooms without kennels.
New home needed
But now Holbrook Animal Rescue Centre is in danger of closing. It is being forced out of its home in Old Holbrook by a new housing development which is about to be built. The volunteers have just 18 months to raise £1.5m to enable the centre to be relocated to a new, larger facility.
So, Billy’s has decided to adopt Holbrook Animal Rescue Centre as its charity and we hope our generous customers will help us in raising much-needed funds. Billy is going to kick-start the fundraising with a generous donation of £200, then we will have collection boxes at the till and hope our lovely customers will pop in any loose change. November 2nd charity day
*We are hosting a `meet and greet’ day on Saturday, November 2nd. Volunteers from the Holbrook Animal Rescue Centre will be coming to the café with their dogs to talk about the fundraising and the work of the centre. Come and enjoy a doggy cuddle and chat from 10 am until 2pm, and don’t forget to make a donation.
